Creating the Hat of a Hero
Before hat-makers Herbert Johnson joined the Swaine Adeney Brigg group, it was situated at No.13 Old Burlington Street in London. In 1980 two American gentlemen came into the shop and introduced themselves as Messrs Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford. Being hatters to Royalty and with an outstanding reputation worldwide for the craftsmanship of the finest quality, they were certainly in the right place.
Mr. Spielberg announced that he was on the brink of making an adventure film with Mr. Ford as the central figure, and explained how the main character Indiana Jones should be wearing a hat pivotal to his persona and the film's storyline.
A classic and tall stovepipe poet style was chosen and acted as the foundation for what was to become the iconic raiders hat. The Poet itself has been made by Herbert Johnson since the 1890s. With its wide brim and tall straight-sided crown, made from the finest fur felt, it has always been deemed ageless. A shade of brown rabbit fur felt called ‘sable’ was chosen, and as with all bespoke creations at Herbert Johnson, modifications were made to give it a unique character.
The 'Indy' hat was made distinctive by reducing the brim width only on the sides, creating a more dimensional brim. By shaping the brim into an ovoid, it gave protection to the eyes & neck whilst reducing the sides helped with filming from various camera angles. The now iconic-explorer look was enhanced by snapping the front brim down and altering the original ribbon from 50mm to 38mm, resulting in the appearance of an even taller crown.
The re-worked and subtly modified Herbert Johnson Poet hat gave Mr. Spielberg the look he had envisioned for the character of Indiana Jones and the 'Indy' hat was born. Apart from the original hat made for Harrison Ford, Herbert Johnson made a further 45 'Indy' hats of assorted sizes, some for Mr. Ford and the remainder for the film stunt actors on the set of Raiders of The Lost Ark. Subsequent commissions followed for the following two sequels.
The tremendous success of the Indiana Jones films have secured their place in popular culture forever and just like the original poet, the hero 'Indy' Poet is ageless and enjoys enduring popularity to this day.

Ordering This Product
This product will be handcrafted to order by the specialist hatting team at Herbert Johnson. To ensure adornment as soon as humanly possible, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to check the current lead time for this product.
All Poet hats are created on straight-sided graduated blocks scaled up and down proportionally from an average open crown height of 5½ inches at a size 59cm. This ensures that no matter what size you order, the proportions of the hat remain in balance. Made with the men's left-sided bow as standard as in this display option.
Place the string or tape around your head above your ear and across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. Measure your head exactly where you want the hat to sit. Measure in centimetres. If your measurement falls between sizes, round up to the nearest centimetre. It may help to either do this in the mirror or have someone to help for accuracy.
Cairo 'Forced Distressing' - All hats are handcrafted to order for each customer. The mission is to provide impeccable quality handmade bespoke headwear for clients. For this reason, Herbert Johnson does not offer any distressing or forced soiling treatments on hats as this may compromise the hats longevity and returns policy. Quality sweatbands are also put in securely as new and will not be delivered 'folded over'. The screen used hats endured varying extremes and adjustments whilst on-set; Herbert Johnson encourages any customers wishing to mimic the effects of these conditions on their hats, either naturally or forced, to research the best methods for achieving this so they can undertake this themselves in full knowledge of any risks of compromising the hat's longevity.
All hats are completely bespoke and handcrafted to order from only the finest sustainably sourced materials at Herbert Johnson. Working closely with fur felt hood suppliers in Portugal, choosing only the highest quality fur felt which is ordered to exacting specifications. All felts are pre-shrunk during the blocking stage to avoid later shrinking as much as possible. Rabbit fur felt is pounced to a smooth finish and coated with a protector to prolong its resistance to the elements. Not as dense as beaver fur felts, it makes for a very fine quality fur felt hat. Finished with a true grosgrain 'Indy' ribbon, it is screen accurate to the original film hats, still produced to the original specifications and using the very same machines.
The 2020 Deep Sable Rabbit Fur Felt has been redesigned, as a result of the ongoing research and development mission, to bring you the very finest and most historically accurate products possible. The felt has been matched for colour, weight and density, with a collection of pristine Poets made by the hatter Mr. Richard Swales himself back in the 1980s. This new felt brings you closer than ever before to the original felt, the perfect combination of quality, longevity and floppiness.
Postage and Packaging
Once ordered you will be notified of the lead time. Herbert Johnson hats are carefully packaged into cardboard postal dispatch boxes. With worldwide shipping available, delivery costs are calculated based on the weight of each product and country, to which the item is to be posted. For some products, delivery costs can be included in the purchase price.
Store the hat somewhere dry, brim down preferably in its hat-box. Use a soft-bristled hat or clothes brush to keep the hat looking at its best. Be sure to brush counterclockwise, freeing any dirt from the felt. It is recommended not to force-dry the hat and to simply allow it to dry naturally, brim side down. If the hat does incur shrinkage and loss of shape do not despair, Herbert Johnson can provide a repair and refurbishment service.
It is important to note that lead times on orders vary, depending on the current volume of orders being placed. When new orders are received they are entered into a making schedule, and when ready to be processed, an order usually takes around 10 working days to be made by the dedicated hatters at Herbert Johnson. If you are hoping to order your hat for a particular event, please ensure you make your order in plenty of time before your deadline. If your order is time-sensitive, please inform the hatting workshop directly and they shall strive to accommodate.
Handcrafted hats have a wait time of 8-12 weeks usually, but please be aware that this can be subject to change. Bespoke orders vary depending on what materials and supplies are to be specially sourced and ordered to fulfil the order.
